Twoody or Jan?
Both are free, need no account, and run models on your computer with llama.cpp. Jan is a chat app whose code is published, for Apple Silicon Macs, Windows and Linux; Twoody is an assistant for your documents, on every Mac from macOS 13, which also exists for Windows and Linux.

What is said here about Jan was read on its own pages on September 26, 2026: www.jan.ai/docs/desktop/install/mac, www.jan.ai/docs/desktop/file-upload, github.com/janhq/jan/blob/v0.8.4/src-tauri/plugins/tauri-plugin-rag/src/parser.rs. It may have changed since.
Choose Twoody if…
- your Mac has an Intel chip;
- your documents include scans, and you want answers that cite file and page;
- you want to dictate your questions, transcribed on the computer.
Choose Jan if…
- you want an app whose code is published;
- you need a publicly released app on Windows or Linux today (Twoody is in private beta there);
- you also want cloud models, with your own API key.
Or both
Nothing stops you from keeping both: they are free and need no account. Jan to try models, on Windows and Linux too; Twoody to work on your documents, on any Mac from macOS 13, and on Windows and Linux in its private beta.
Frequently asked questions
Does Jan run on an Intel Mac?
No: Jan's documentation says Intel Macs are not supported, and asks for Apple Silicon and macOS 13.6 or later. Twoody runs on Apple Silicon and on Intel Macs, more slowly, from macOS 13.
Can Jan read scanned PDFs?
Not in version 0.8.4: its document reader refuses scanned PDFs, since it has no text recognition yet. Twoody reads them with the Mac's text recognition, on the Mac.
Are both free?
Yes, and neither needs an account. Twoody is free for personal and professional use, with no paid offer.
Twoody is in private beta.
On Mac, Windows and Linux, free, with no account and no subscription — and on iPhone and Android, with Twoody on your computer. Leave your email: we will write to you when Twoody opens to you.
